It should have been obvious from the start that there was something unusual about Marie-Antoine Carême. In 1794, at the bloody height of the French Revolution, he appeared on the doorstep of a cheap Parisian chophouse, seemingly abandoned by his parents. This foundling would go on to become one of the most celebrated figures in the western world, a chef to kings and emperors, and is still a revered figure in the world of haute cuisine. However, few realised, then or now, the darkness behind his meteoric rise.

I think I’ve bought myself enough time to send you a message. I’ve barely had enough time lately to keep track of what’s been going in the rest of the world, but from what I’m hearing the Shadow Council is mired in internal wrangling for the moment. I trust you to keep a handle on anything that does happen, and I’m glad you’re on the spot: I don’t think I’m going to have much chance to get involved personally for the next while.

As much as I may devote myself to uncovering the threat of vampires in our midst, I can still take time to enjoy vampire-related entertainment. There’s so much of it these days, after all, and while 90 percent of everything is proverbially crap, there are some jewels to be found amid the muck. Well, it gives me a lot of pleasure to share one such jewel that has come to my attention: Blood and Bone China.

Many fictions of vampires and other immortals speak of the pain of remaining forever young as those you love grow old and die. Perhaps there are some vampires who have indeed felt this kind of loss. However, at least one of them is not just indifferent to the effect that time has on mortal humans but actively takes pleasure in the destruction and debasement of youth, beauty and talent. There are other vampires who are more deadly, but few among them are quite so vile.

Art for Vampires: Blood in the Gallery

How many of us, on suffering a wound of some kind, have stared fascinated at the blood as it seeped or trickled out of the cut, revealing in a very real way just what makes us tick? You don’t have to be a vampire to be fascinated by blood, and there are many of human artists who are happy to make use of the sanguine humor in their works.

Vegetable Vampires: Plants that Thirst for Blood

Although I have devoted my life to exposing the vampire menace among us, there are times when I feel that humanity might just be a little too obsessed with vampires, seeing fangs and a lust for blood where none exists. I’m not sure whether this is the positive result of the menace that surrounds us every day or just a manifestation of the confusion that the Shadow Council’s Media Exploitation Division has sown.

Profiles in Blood – Hetaera, Consort of Darkness

In Ancient Greece, respectable women were barely educated, hardly ever seen outside the home and rarely heard from. Instead, the most notable women in Greek society were those for whom respect was a double-edged sword: the hetaerae, or courtesans, beautiful, independent and intelligent women who were companions to the rulers of the ancient city states and required to provide them with pleasures of the mind, rather than just the body. However, although the vampire who takes her name from this class of women shares their many accomplishments, it is a long time since she has given any thought to providing pleasure for others.

Emmett on the Run – A Vampire Hunted in Chicago

It’s been a little while since we heard from the vampire rebel Emmett. Last spotted in Chicago, he seemed to be settling in to causing some havoc among the vampires of the windy city. However, it looks as though those plans may have been put on hold, courtesy of some machinations by the Shadow Council, hints of which we’ve heard a little of already.
