Have I become a vampire’s agony uncle? Penpal? The young vampire Susanna seems unwilling to be dissuaded by the fact that I don’t care too much about her life as a bloodsucking leech. She’s made her peace with what she is – she chose to be a vampire. Still, there’s some value in the fact that she’s showing us what life is like as a vampire. In fact, it now seems that she’s getting more involved in deeper vampire doings. This could be very interesting.
Hey Crazy Conspiracy Guy,
So life is getting interesting around here lately. I know I said that I was just lazing around and enjoying this afterlife of mine, but a girl can’t stay lazy forever, can she? Well, I suppose she can, but I won’t. I didn’t decide to become a vampire in order to wallow around in luxury, as nice as that sounds. No, I did it because I wanted my life to be more interesting. And lounging on silk sheets is really boring after the first few minutes.
Johnny disagrees, of course. He gets annoyed whenever I’m not around when he wants me to be. To be honest, he’s a little bit clingy. Under his cool exterior, he can still be a little boy sometimes. He’s just going to have to learn that a girl needs her space. I’ve been spending more of my nights out on the town, and I’ve met some very unusual people. One of them has even decided to take me on as an apprentice, and I’m game, so long as it keeps me interested.
I’m not going to tell you who my benefactor is, but that whole thing about elder vampires getting the younger ones to do their work? Totally true. There’s a whole heap of paranoia among the older vamps, and they watch each other so closely that a new vampire who’s unaligned (thanks Johnny!) is a pretty valuable commodity. So this last week I headed to New York, flying first class all the way. Yes, I took the red-eye like any vampire would (gives a whole new meaning to that name, doesn’t it? Next time you’re overnighting, check your fellow passengers to see if anyone looks particularly perky. Or hungry.), but the main reason I got the job was because I was young. That meant I could pass for human without a problem, and unlike most elders, I was used to working with normal human strength and senses. Oh, and it helped that I was expendable.
I don’t kid myself at all. If you’re the head guy in charge, you don’t give a secret, dangerous job to someone valuable. You give it to someone clueless, who can’t give anything away if they get caught. That was what I was there for, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. It was like being James Bond, watching for people watching me, being ready to break into violence at the slightest provocation. That’s the kind of interesting life I’m talking about!
Sadly, it all went very smoothly. I had a package to deliver, which I did in daylight hours. No one paid much attention to me, and the most excitment I had was maxing out my credit card in New York’s boutiques. (I was well paid for the job.) New York is the place to be – I was never there when I was alive – and I had one night in town to hit as many clubs as I could, so I did. One night in New York, and it wasn’t enough, but who knows? There might be more jobs after this one.
So why am I telling you all of this? Because and the job’s over, so it’s not secret any more. Plus, at least you listen. Johnny was sulking when I got back and didn’t want to know about my adventures. He’ll get over it – he’d better. In the meantime, my new life is getting interesting at last. Who knows what I’ll have to tell you soon.
-Susanna the Spy
So Susanna is working for an elder. I wonder who? And is it a coincidence that she was sent on a cloak-and-dagger mission to New York, where Emmett was only recently? It looks like she may be getting deeper into the darkness of the Shadow World than she suspects. I might feel sorry for her if she wasn’t what she is. At least we have a new source of information until she disappears altogether.
